Shireburne Arms

The Shireburne Arms in Hurst Green dates back to the 18th century. A William Mitton is documented as being an inn keeper at Hurst Green in the 1700`s.. Undoubtedly at the Shireburne Arms that was about the only inn at Hurst Green.

This is where J.R.R. Tolkien and now the author of this family history reside when visiting. It is a local pub as well as a great place for lodging when touring the area. I highly recommend it as did J.R.R Tolkien.

The back of the Shireburn Arms below looking toward Great Mitton.

To the right is a monument to World War l veterans. This is right across from the Shireburne Arms. It denotes the three townships that were part of the original feudal lands of Ralph the Red, progenitor of the de Mitton family. These include Bailey and Aughton the location of Stonyhurst. The Tolkien trail begins here.

The pub area below and a long time happy pub patron since the days of Queen Victoria.    Good place to meet the locals. Dogs welcomed.
